Costing
Costing.
Pestproof Fences have several costing models for you to choose from that range from supply and build to supply of specific components only. Our goal is to provide you with what you need, where you need it, when you need it, so that you can achieve your desired conservation outcome the most efficient way.
All large projects start with a quote for the complete job after an onsite inspection. This quote clearly describes each component of the fence construction process and its cost. It is from this that you can decide which construction activities or non unique fence components you may wish to supply yourself or source from a sponsor. We also discuss with you fund raising and funding sources (NZ only), which may be available to you to complete the project and help you on your way, as part of our service.
We are also happy to discuss with you other fence design options using components from our fencing system. We can manufacture our micro woven mesh in any length and widths up to 2.1 meters allowing you to experiment with different fence designs that may suit your environment or array of predators better.
To provide a starting place for you, to decide which fence construction option best suits, here are some commonly arrived at solutions.
Turn key option.
This is where Pestproof Fences Ltd do everything for you from earthworks to complete enclosure. You will still have to decide where you want the fence though!
U build option.
This is where we supply all the components and you supply the earth moving and post ramming contractors and the labour and equipment to erect the fence. We will supply training and oversight to your specification at a nominal charge. This is essentially your cheapest option for building a fence as local volunteer labour can be used and local contractors may contribute machinery and or their time at reduced rates to support the programme.
Supply of your own posts.
The usual posts used are standard 3M #1 ¼ round C4’s (or C5’s if specified). As long as they are to specification and seasoned for at least one month they can be sourced from anywhere (though we do recommend slow grown trees to achieve good timber density). The supply of your own posts may be an ideal way for a local timber supplier to support your project and provide posts at a reduced rate or even supply posts as sponsorship.
Hybrid.
The hybrid option is a combination of all or some of the above options that suit your local sponsorship and volunteer situation.
Warranty
We guarantee our materials and workmanship. Pestproof Fences Limited will, for a period of two years after full commissioning, repair or replace any faulty materials provided by Pestproof Fences Limited and any faults in construction caused by Pestproof Fences Limited.
Unfortunately we can not provide a guarantee that the interior of the fence will remain predator free for any given period after construction as events beyond the control of Pestproof Fences ltd occur as soon as we leave the site.
Helpful information that you should consider when planning a fence.
- Erosion is the biggest enemy for a predator proof fence. Ensuring that the fence line minimises the passage of water through or under the fence will greatly reduce the need for maintenance over time.
- When choosing the fence line, also think about minimising vegetation clearance. Some exotic plants can be good interim habitat and can be effective nurseries for native plant species. This also minimises the problem of disposing of cleared vegetation. The usual disposal method is to crush and burry as near to the clearance site as possible to minimize cartage costs.
- A chunky parcel of land requires less fence per enclosed hectare than a long thin area. If you have the option, try and massage your boundaries so you fence an area that is as long as it is wide. Avoid fencing narrow fingers that extend from your core reserve unless absolutely necessary. Quite often the cost of the extra fence may not warrant the area gained. It may be better to negotiate with neighbours and adjust boundaries to gain the equivalent area as a strip along the edge of your reserve.
- Entry points, by their very nature, are a place where pest animals will find it easiest to breach your fence. It is only at these points that pests do not have to challenge the barrier and could be carried in by accident to the reserve. Making sure that entry points do not focus animals towards the fence by placing entry ways etc near external corners or in convex sections of the fence to avoid panicked animals channeling through your gate during passage of vehicles or personel.
